ArtTech Conversation x Swissnex in San Francisco: Open Source Innovation

We’re excited to announce the next edition of ArtTech Conversation, presented in collaboration with Swissnex in San Francisco and Project AMI.

Join us online on June 17, 2025, at 5:00 pm CET / 8:00 am PST for a one-hour webinar exploring how open-source innovation is reshaping cultural institutions worldwide.

What’s the event about?

This session, Gaming the Museum: How Open-Source Innovation is Transforming Cultural Spaces, dives into the experience of museum educators, interaction designers, and game studio partners from Switzerland and the United States as they co-developed 20 open-source game prototypes through Project AMI (Art + Museums Interacting).

Built in fast-paced, 30-day sprints and tested through public play sessions, these prototypes reveal how gamified experiences can shift museum visitors from passive observers to active participants. The process, designed to be easily adopted by institutions, also demonstrates how sharing tools, documentation, and methods can unlock powerful collaboration across borders.

Speakers will explore how open-source practices not only foster international cooperation, but also generate entrepreneurial energy, allowing museums and studios to continue developing projects well beyond their original timelines.

The session will be moderated by journalist Muriel Siki, followed by a live audience Q&A.

Since virtual seats are limited, we warmly encourage early registration:

About Swissnex in San Francisco

Swissnex in San Francisco is part of a global network for international collaboration, an initiative of the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). It connects Switzerland, North America, and the world in science, education, innovation, and the arts and fosters exchange between the regions. Its mission is to connect people and ideas from Switzerland and the San Francisco Bay Area to foster exchange in research, education, innovation, and the arts.

About Project AMI (Art + Museums Interacting)

Project AMI is a growing community of museum professionals reimagining visitor engagement through experimentation. Launched by the Max Kohler Foundation in Zurich, AMI brought together eight museums from Switzerland and the U.S. to develop and test 20 interactive, open-source prototypes with the help of Boston-based game design studio FableVision. Guided by five core principles—audience-focused, shifting mindsets, radical sharing, community of action, and playfulness—AMI invites other museums to join the movement by exploring the prototypes or connecting through events and updates at www.projectami.com.

We look forward to your participation in this exchange of practical ideas and creative approaches to museum innovation.
